How do I get xbox live? Help please!?

I don't play that much but I bought this alice in wonderland madness returns game and I really like it but it comes with the 1st American McGee Alice in wonderland game but you need to download it to play it and when I try to download it, it says I need xbox live. So I then try to get xbox live from my xbox and then it says I need to connect to wifi so I try to connect to wifi and it says it won't connect because there is some type of error or something like that. I'm confused so someone who knows what I'm talking about please help.
